The Big Draw: Take Measure of the Earth - Rich Mix

The Big Draw: Take Measure of the Earth

Once again we are partnering up with Art Hoppers for another Big Draw! This time, let's learn from nature through drawing.
For this Big Draw family workshop, we will be looking closely at patterns in nature, spirals, and repeating shapes.

If we look closely at nature around us, life cycles and visual patterns of growth are everywhere. Flowers, plants, snowflakes and even human cells reveal geometric structures of incredible and intricate beauty. In nature we see science, maths and art work together.

There is so much that we have learnt from the natural world, but what can we now learn, at a time when pollution and climate change present a threat to our future?

In the spirit of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, we’ll take a look in our recycling boxes and get creative by:

  • drawing mandalas and repeating patterns using a cardboard tube
  • making a DIY spirograph drawing machine from plastic containers and card

Have a rummage in your recycling box at home and start collecting the following materials so you can take part:

  • recycled card packaging i.e. cereal boxes, food or drink boxes (several)
  • bottle tops, plastic lids & containers (mixed shapes & sizes)

You’ll also need:

  • A4 plain paper
  • A ruler
  • A pair of scissors
  • An eraser
  • Felt tips (optional)
